from SF GATE:
Golden State's franchise point guard shocked his coaches and teammates by exercising his early-termination clause Monday night, forgoing the final year and $17.8 million left on his contract.
As of 12:01 a.m. this morning, Davis was an unrestricted free agent, free to sign with whomever he wants.
It's a surprising turn of events that ranks as both a power move and a huge risk for Davis, who is essentially forcing the Warriors back to the negotiating table after failing to secure a long-term extension.
Golden State vice president Chris Mullin now has three options:
He can let Davis walk for nothing, which isn't likely.
He can re-sign Davis, which would likely lower Davis' salary for next season while upping the long-term commitment.
Or Mullin can execute a sign-and-trade, which would end the Davis Era in Oakland, but bring the Warriors something in return.
You, Baron Davis, are one in six names of basketball players I can remember and actually track. And you know what? Playing chicken with people who love you and pay for your powerade sponsorships just isn't nice, boo.
